The overall goal of this series is to enhance skills of recovery house residence staff working in recovery house settings with emphasis on supporting recovery/resiliency, becoming informed regarding individuals impacted by trauma, and cultural awareness. Strategies will be presented that support individuals with lived experience- including person-centered practice, empowerment, collaboration and wellness care. 

The following topics will be covered in this six-week series: Transformation of  Addiction Services in Philadelphia and nationwide, Addiction: Understanding the Basics in a Transformational Context, Practice Guidelines in a Recovery House setting, Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Medication Assisted Treatment of Addiction, Trauma-Informed Services, Overview of Domestic Violence, Forensic Issues for Recovery House residents, Stages of Change and Introduction to Motivational Interviewing, WRAP, Involuntary Commitment Protocols, and Best Practices in the Recovery House setting.

Learning Objectives: 
  • Define key terms such as Transformation, Severe Mental Illness, Addiction, Co-occurring Disorders and Recovery/Resiliency;
  • List principles associated with providing transformed recovery/resiliency-oriented supports in a recovery house setting;
  • Summarize ways to put into practice the principles of transformed recovery/resiliency-oriented systems of care;
  • Describe how holistic factors such as culture, physical health and mental well-being enhance the effectiveness of supports offered;
  • Discuss methods of communication that are effective in offering supports in a recovery house setting.
Intended Audience: 

This introductory level series is designed for staff and administrators in both OAS funded and privately owned Recovery Houses in Philadelphia.
