This workshop is designed to present material on the impact of traumatic exposure on the human nervous system and how to apply this research in a clinical setting. There are four components to this workshop. First, research relating to the biological impact of trauma will be presented. Second, the presented research will be translated into a language that clinicians can comfortably share with their clients. Third, specific clinical interventions based on altered biology will be discussed. Finally, trainees will be given the opportunity to share case studies with the instructors and each other in order to identify interventions that match the clients’ symptoms

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the key components of the nervous system affected by traumatic exposure
  • List the three key components of the limbic system as they relate to heightened emotionality
  • Summarize the importance of translating neuroscience concepts and language for clients
  • Describe the key biological outcomes of traumatic exposure in “user-friendly” language
  • List the three levels of clinical intervention based on presenting symptomology
  • Describe the poly-vagal theory as it applies to avoidance and numbing
  • Recommend clinical interventions and strategies based on neurological changes that occur as a result of traumatic events or as a result of non-trauma related psychiatric diagnoses

Intended Audience:

The target audience are those individuals providing direct services to clients. Although the focus of the presentation is on traumatic exposure, trainees serving clients with additional diagnoses will benefit
