This will be an in-depth, interactive training for participants interested in developing capacity and knowledge about screening for harmful or abusive behavior. The workshop will explore key differences between screening for harmful behavior and screening for having been harmed, elaborate site-specific considerations and review strategies for effective engagement when screening for abusive behavior. This is a full-day, advanced Tier III workshop.

Learning Objectives: 

1) Identify potential benefits and risks of screening clients for abusive behavior toward their intimate partners in general practice settings.
2) Describe three differences between screening for harmful behavior and screening for having been harmed.
3) Develop ease in broaching the subject of harmful behavior with clients or patients.
4) Explore considerations for establishing screening that is appropriate for specific settings.
5) Identify barriers to engagement when conducting a screen for abusive behavior.
6) Describe strategies for best possible engagement when screening for harmful behavior.

DBHIdS and OHS staff and providers, behavioral health service provider staff, and other human services and community based organization staff
