About This Course

Philadelphia has one of the highest rates of smoking among American cities and is the poorest big city in America. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health reports that the greatest concentration of tobacco use, and the related health consequences are found among one in four residents living in poverty, many of whom receive behavioral health services. Efforts to address this concern has had a mixed and inadequate response by the behavioral health provider network due to entrenched false beliefs that sustains social acceptance of tobacco use in the treatment culture and a lack of understanding on the rationale, purpose, and provision of evidence-based tobacco use disorder interventions.

The overall goals of this presentation are to promote a more universal understanding that current tobacco interventions are not meeting community need and to advance a consensus by Philadelphia’s behavioral health network for a collaborative systems approach to mitigate tobacco-related health disparities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Upon completion of the training participants will:
  2. Develop a common understanding of the impact of tobacco use on Philadelphians in behavioral health services and the existing factors that serve to sustain a high prevalence of tobacco use disorder in the recovery community.
  3. Describe a community-wide advocacy strategy to mitigate tobacco-related health disparities and advance interventions to better meet the needs of the provider network and individuals in treatment.

Intended Audience:

The target audience includes the CBH provider network, all DBHIDS and CBH employees, recovery peer specialists, advocates, and community allies.
