About This Course

This two-part workshop is designed to introduce the theoretical underpinnings and practical techniques of Motivational Interviewing, an evidence-based and person-centered approach intensifying motivation and commitment to increase health-promoting behaviors. Motivational Interviewing operationalizes strategies for collaborating with people toward facilitating lasting and self-driven change. The approach has been linked to improved outcomes for individual who live with behavioral health and medical disorders. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in experiential exercises, role-play practice and learn several strategies to improve their capacity to work with participants.

Learning Objectives: 

a. Describe the “spirit” of Motivational Interviewing;
b. Practice introductory techniques used in Motivational Interviewing;
c. Discuss how Motivational Interviewing (MI) could be used with persons in various contexts and in short-term counseling.
d. Conceptualize potential “next steps” toward developing proficiency in MI.

Completion Requirements: 

Participants must attend the entire session, participate in all activities, and submit an evaluation within the 7 days of training to receive credits and a certificate. All CEU certificates and certificates of attendance will be received through the DBHIDS Learning Hub. Once you have completed your evaluation you will have access to your CEU or Certificate of Attendance through your DBHIDS Learning Hub Account.

Credit Statements: 

BHTEN is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and is authorized to issue the IACET CEU.
