About This Course

Help caretakers in Philadelphia to become more willing, ready, and able to intervene with someone at risk of suicide. Participants will learn to understand the ways personal and societal attitudes affect views on suicide and intervention; identify key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and actions required to implement it; provide guidance and suicide first-aid to a person at risk in ways that meet their individual safety needs; and recognize other important aspects of suicide prevention including integrating suicide prevention resources in the community and participants’ own self-care

Day 1

  • Set the tone, norms, and expectations of the learning experience
  • Assess the ways that personal and societal attitudes affect views on suicide and interventions
  • Describe the intervention needs of a person at risk of suicide
  • Create an understanding of the impact that attitudes can have on the intervention process
  • Present a model for effective suicide intervention
  • Provide participants with the knowledge and skills to recognize risk and develop safeplans to reduce the risk of suicide
  •  Develop skills through observation and supervised simulation experiences in large and small groups

Day 2

  • Present a model for effective suicide intervention
  • Develop skills through observation and supervised simulation experiences in large and small groups
  • Provide participants with the knowledge and skills to recognize risk and develop safeplans to reduce the risk of suicide
  • Generate information about resources in the local community
  • Generate a commitment by participants to transform local resources into helping networks, creating shared language in suicide prevention/intervention
