About This Course

Most youth today are connected to the world around them via technology.  For all its benefits, research shows that technology has a negative impact on the development of empathy within our young people…fewer teens describe themselves as having “tender, concerned feelings” for others.  While research is still on-going, there seems to be a correlation between increased digital involvement and decreased empathy.  Since technology is not going away, how can we use it to help our young people develop empathy?

Learning Objectives: 

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Cite the current research on the development of empathy in youth;
  • Explore the positive and negative impact of technology on empathy development; and,
  • Develop strategies to increase empathy in youth through the use of technology.
Intended Audience: 

This introductory level course is designed for all professionals (behavioral health specialists, teachers, social workers, etc.) who work with young people.  Parents are also welcomed.

Completion Requirements: 

Participants must attend entire presentation and complete a course evaluation in order to receive credits.
