About This Course

From 2009 to 2014, the Pennsylvania Autism Census found that the number of Pennsylvanians with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) receiving services increased from nearly 20,000 individual to over 55,000 individuals. The number of individuals with autism who had contact with first responders has also increased. The location, the circumstance and the outcomes are different in each case, but, there is an underlying theme in each incident-a call for training for first responders, law enforcement officials and providers on how to identify and interact with individuals with autism.

Learning Objectives:
  • Compare the increasing prevalence of autism today versus a decade ago.
  • Summarize the three core deficits domains of autism.
  • Recognize the various symptoms of autism found within all three domains.
  • Apply the information gained from the training and implement various strategies in order to increase awareness and safety for individuals with autism and first responders, members of the law enforcement community and providers who interact with them.
