About This Course

Empathy is a natural phenomenon in humans that promotes social cohesion and group formation.  But what happens when that process becomes faulty?  Intergroup empathy can be a mechanism that underlies racism and prejudice.  Understanding this process and some of the biases that our minds can engage in can be helpful in counteracting these harmful thought processes.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify how empathy promotes group living and social cohesion.
• Define intergroup empathy bias and identify how this impacts interactions with others.
• List strategies for decreasing intergroup empathy bias.
