About This Course
This workshop is designed to introduce the theoretical underpinnings and practical techniques of Motivational Interviewing, an evidence-based and person-centered approach intensifying motivation and commitment to increase health-promoting behaviors. Motivational interviewing operationalizes strategies for collaborating with people toward facilitating lasting and self-driven change. The approach has been linked to improved outcomes for individuals who live with behavioral health and medical disorders. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in experiential exercises, role-play practice and learn several strategies to improve their capacity to work with participants.

- Describe the “Spirit” of Motivational Interviewing
- Practice introductory techniques used in Motivational Interviewing
- Discuss how Motivational Interviewing (MI) could be used with persons in various contexts and in short-term counseling.

Completion Requirements:
Participants must attend the entire session, participate in all activities, and submit an evaluation within the 7 days of training to receive credits and a certificate. All CEU certificates and certificates of attendance will be received through the DBHIDS Learning Hub. Once you have completed your evaluation you will have access to your CEU or Certificate of Attendance through your DBHIDS Learning Hub Account.

Dr. Casey Bohrman (she/her/hers) is an Associate Professor at West Chester University in the Graduate Department of Social Work and a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. Her practice background is in the areas of mental health and homeless services. She first gained exposure to Motivational Interviewing (MI) in 2004 through her work in a Housing First program. She began doing trainings on MI in partnership with Dr. Julie Tennille in 2012. Over the past 8 years they have trained a wide range of health professionals. She currently serves as a consultant with the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where she helps to coach 3rd year medical students in using MI with standardized patients. She also works as a research therapist for the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, where she provides motivational interviewing to participants experiencing side effects of head and neck cancer treatment. Along with Dr. Tennille, she has published several articles about MI. Most recently she has assisted Dr. Tennille in developing a training toolkit that utilizes MI to help mental health providers enhance their ability to have discussions with clients about sexuality, intimacy, and dating.
