About This Course
This training will explore various aspects of substance abuse in older adults, including alcohol use, illicit drug use, and both prescription and non-prescription opioids. Common medication errors and misuse will also be covered. Attendees will gain knowledge of substance use disorder diagnostic criteria from the DSM-V, as well as the signs and symptoms of substance use. The session will also highlight resources for screening substance use in older adults and provide an overview of available treatment options.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize symptoms, risks, and protective factors of substance abuse in older adults.
- Identify commonly abused or misused illicit or prescription drugs.
- Compare substance abuse screening tools and treatment options for substance abuse.

Participants must attend the entire session, participate in all activities, and submit an evaluation within the 7 days of training to receive credits and a certificate. All CEU certificates and certificates of attendance will be received through the DBHIDS Learning Hub. Once you have completed your evaluation you will have access to your CEU or Certificate of Attendance through your DBHIDS Learning Hub Account.

Lauren M. Krebs has been working in the field of drug and alcohol prevention for the past six years throughout various areas of Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia, Lancaster, and Harrisburg. She currently serves as the Prevention Program Supervisor for the Dauphin County Department of Drug and Alcohol Prevention and a Trainer for Penncares Support Services. Lauren attended Bloomsburg University for her undergraduate degree and Capella University for her Master’s in Public Health degree. She is also a Certified Peer Specialist. Lauren has found a great passion for prevention work, believing that education and empowerment are essential to building a stronger tomorrow and helping individual live happy, healthy lives free of drugs and alcohol.
