About This Course

The pursuit of perfection via Instagram has profoundly impacted our online and real world lives, particularly for our youth. Its visual nature places a premium on appearance – often a highly curated, perfectly filtered one. Teens compare themselves to those filtered images of their peers and celebrities, seeking an unattainable level of perfection. The cost of that perfection can be negative feelings about appearance and body satisfaction, low self-esteem, increased risk for eating disorders, depression and other mental health issues. This workshop will address the impact of Instagram on how youth socialize and on their mental and physical health.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain Instagram and other social media sites’ impact on the socialization of youth
  2. Outline the process of how youth engage in social comparison in social media, and its impact on the mental health of youth
  3. Identify strategies to assist youth in healthy social media engagement
