About This Course

Epidemiological studies estimate that 1-3% of the generation population meet criteria for intellectual disability (with approximately 85% scoring in the mild range), and an estimated 59% of individuals being unknown to intellectual/developmental disability (I/DD) services. Across disciplines, research on professional attitudes consistently flags concerns around the ability to recognize intellectual disability (ID), identify protected rights, and communicate effectively. This introductory course provides a foundational understanding of ID, including discussions around intellectual and adaptive functioning, common co-occurrences and trends, and prevalence rates. In addition, the course reviews historical context and ongoing advocacy issues, particularly around community inclusion and protected rights. Finally, this course discusses best practice strategies for effective and respectful communication, with the goals of adjusting appropriately for cognitive load and supporting self-determination and positive identity development.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define intellectual disability, including sub-concepts such as intellectual and adaptive functioning.
  • Relate historical discrimination and stigma to modern-day attitudes, advocacy issues, and protected rights.
  • List at least 2-3 protected rights for individuals with intellectual disability.
  • Explain the role of dignity of risk and self-determination in supporting and advocating for people with disabilities.
  • Identify at least 2-3 strategies for adapting to differences in cognitive load.
