About This Course

Social media plays a significant role in the lives of young people, shaping how they communicate, explore identity, access information, and build social connections. As platforms continue to evolve, professionals working with youth are increasingly tasked with understanding the digital environments that influence development and daily life. This course offers an overview of current trends in youth social media use, with attention to both the potential benefits and the challenges. Participants will explore how social media intersects with mental health, self-esteem, behavior, and social interaction, while also learning to identify signs that may indicate risk or distress. The session highlights strategies for supporting youth in developing healthy, informed relationships with social media, with a focus on digital literacy, communication, and balanced media use.

  • Describe current trends in youth social media use
  • Identify both the benefits and the risks of social media for youth
  • Recognize red flags and risk behaviors in the digital spaces (cyberbullying, exploitation, self-harm promotion)
  • Learn how to engage youth in conversations about healthy social media habits
  • Explore tools and techniques that build digital resilience and safe media literacy in youth

Completion Requirements: 

Participants must attend the entire session, participate in all activities, and submit an evaluation within the 7 days of training to receive credits and a certificate. All CEU certificates and certificates of attendance will be received through the DBHIDS Learning Hub. Once you have completed your evaluation you will have access to your CEU or Certificate of Attendance through your DBHIDS Learning Hub Account.
