About This Course

This workshop will provide clinicians who are treating individuals experiencing both IPV and substance abuse with tools to provide a trauma informed, empowerment-based approaches to screening, assessment and intervention. Participants will learn to screen for IPV; develop understanding of how trauma impacts safety, access to treatment and recovery; and have strategies for supporting individuals as they move towards safety and sobriety.

***NOTE: Tier II workshop, IPV for Health and Human Services Professionals, should be completed prior to attending this workshop.

Learning Objectives: 

  1. Define Substance Use and Mental Health Coercion.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of what trauma is, how it develops, and how it shows up in client interactions.
  3. Describe the Bidirectional Increased Risk Pattern Generated by the Presence of Substance Use/Mental Illness in an IPV Situation.
  4. Explain 3 Trauma-Informed Strategies to Screen for Substance Use/Mental Health Coercion.
  5. List 3 Safety Planning Strategies to Reduce Harms Associated with Substance Use/Mental Health Coercion.
  6. Identify an appropriate community referral resource for clients experiencing IPV and harmful substance use.

Completion Requirements: 

Participants must attend the entire session, participate in all activities, and submit an evaluation within the 7 days of training to receive credits and a certificate. All CEU certificates and certificates of attendance will be received through the DBHIDS Learning Hub. Once you have completed your evaluation you will have access to your CEU or Certificate of Attendance through your DBHIDS Learning Hub Account.

BHTEN is accredited by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) and is authorized to issue the IACET CEU. 
As an IACET Accredited Provider, BHTEN offers CEUs for its programs that qualify under the ANSI/IACET Standard.  BHTEN is authorized by IACET to offer CEUs for this program.

Larry Bodhuin, WIT’s Community Educator, began working with WIT in 2022. Additionally, since 2013, she has served as a program leader and advisor for Stay True Philly, leading workshops and aiding youth in social awareness and engagement projects. She also develops and facilitates Diversity, Equity and Inclusion workshops for Middle Schools with the Bridge program. In Ms. Bodhuin’s current role, she develops and facilitates training curricula around domestic violence, awareness and prevention including: Bystander Intervention, Healthy Relationships, DV and Trauma, and DV Screening for Health Professionals.
